Move Aside
The original front door on this ranch-style house benefit ted from a
roof overhang, but frankly, that was the extent of the entry's good
points. Hired to update the Fairway, Kansas, home inside and out,
architect/builder Greg Rot hers and architect Matt Berislavich
realized that a change for the sake of the interior layout— shifting
the entry doorway about 7 feet to one side—would instantly
improve the outlook outside.
For starters, the door's new location made the facade more
symmetrical. The architects capitalized on the effect by adding a gable
above the new wood door and incorporating a series of painted cedar
posts to define an inviting porch. The back wall of the porch is set
off with locally quarried limestone. Although technically considered
a veneer, “ it's real stone, about 5-6 inches thick," Rothers says. £t
inspired deep stone sills for the new windows, left shutterless for a
classic, streamlined look. The Stone also contributed the siding paint
color and replaced the old brick on the chimney; uniting outdoors and
in, thinner pieces face the living room fireplace.
